One Book, One Regis: Home

One Book, One Regis

One Book, One Regis has served as a unifying effort for the Regis community in pursuit of the Jesuit values that drive us toward inclusive excellence. One Book, One Regis is coming back in a new format! Aligning with the Fall 2022 common read for the Regis College First Year Experience, the One Book, One Regis book selection is Read Until You Understand: The Profound Wisdom of Black Life and Literature by Farrah Jasmine Griffin.

PBS Newshour: A Columbia University professor's brief but spectacular take on Black life and literature

Literacy Narrative

A literacy narrative is storytelling about one’s own process and growth through reading and writing. Griffin, like many writers, hopes that as readers we can cherish our own “every day, quiet, ordinary experiences and recognize them as a source of profound wisdom” (PBS News Hour).

We invite you to consider writing or recording a literacy narrative that draws on your own experiences. Your literacy narrative might address questions such as:

  • What specific experiences, people, and environments have shaped the ways that you approach reading or encounter writing?
  • What ways of using language have been historically important to you and why? What new ways of using language have you noticed in your life?
  • When we learn literacy, what are we really learning?
  • What have your literacy experiences been?
  • What are literacy’s promises and what are its perils?
  • What does your language want from you?

Consider your relationship to literacy and how it has helped you to be free, how it has been used against you, or both.
