1918 - Born in Adamsville, Tennessee
1935 – 1939 - Attended Milligan College, Tennessee – 4 years All-Conference in basketball (leading team in scoring every year) and all-conference in Baseball
1939 - Signed with St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, assigned to Johnson City team
1941 - Received Business Administration degree from National Business College, Roanoke, Virginia
1941 -1946 - Served in the U. S. Navy
1945 - Recruited and coached Navy All-Star baseball team composed of many well-known professional players
1946 - Joined Denver Nuggets AAU basketball team
1946 – 1951 - Head Basketball and Baseball Coach, also Assistant English Professor, at Regis College
1948 - Received Masters degree from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colorado
1949 - Regis Basketball team coached by Varnell wins National Catholic Tournament
1951 - Joined Central Bank of Denver (remained with Central Bank until retirement, becoming a Vice-President)
1953 -1954 - Hosted radio talk show and daily sports TV show
1968 - Named Man of the Year by Denver Board of Realtors for his civic achievements
1990 - Inducted into Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame
1997 - Inducted into Regis Hall of Fame
2008 - Died of complications from Alzheimer's disease
