Digitization and Duplication Services for DVD and VHS

Digitization and duplication services for films on DVD or VHS

If you have been using a DVD or VHS in class and now need a streaming version, you can place a request via the streaming request form. The Library will attempt to purchase a digitally licensed streaming version. If no such version is available for licensing, a digitization request may be considered.

  1. Digitization/duplication requests will take up to two weeks to complete, per title.
  2. Owning a VHS Tape or DVD does not confer the right to convert the material to a digital format. For some videos we may already own the streaming rights, but for others we will need to look into acquiring them. If we cannot purchase streaming rights, we will need to evaluate the streaming request using a Fair Use analysis (below) before digitization of the content can be approved. Please complete the streaming request form.

Four tenets of Fair Use:

  1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
  2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
  3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
  4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
